Description

Our panel will share four innovative approaches to cross-unit or cross-divisional collaborations to support undergraduate learning in the areas of communication skills, professional development, and self-awareness and empowerment.

Panelists:
Courtney Santos (Writing Specialist & Scholarship Advisor, Scholarship Opportunities Program) will discuss a model of sustained collaboration with Writing Specialists at the Center for Excellence in Writing & Communication to enhance undergraduate scholarship applicant support.

Brendan Park (Writing Specialist & Scholarship Advisor, Scholarship Opportunities Program) will discuss targeting specific undergraduate populations with relevant professional development information through co-hosted events with other units, including the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, Antrepreneur Center, and faculty of the Schools.

Kerri McCanna (Writing Specialist, Center for Excellence in Writing & Communication) will discuss three of the Writing Center’s thriving partnerships. On-site writing consultations for Student-Athletes, dedicated summer workshops and write-ins for College Alliance for Minority Participation’s Summer Scholars, and one-on-one coaching with Academic Integrity referrals are ways the Center for Excellence in Writing & Communication works with Anteaters to encourage their success.

Lindsey Allgood (Writing Specialist, Center for Excellence in Writing & Communication) will discuss the Writing Center’s recent partnership with UCI Student Wellness to provide Writing+Wellness Workshops, a series of community-building sessions that encourage students to use writing as a tool for mental, physical, emotional and academic well-being.

Following brief presentations from each panelist, our moderator, Darren De Leon (Student Advisor, Scholarship Opportunities Program, and graduating senior, Political Science), will invite questions from the audience and guide our panel and the audience in reflection on identifying best practices for cross-unit collaboration in support of student excellence.

Session Goals & Outcomes

This session aims to increase participants’ awareness of beneficial collaborative practices and models that have been established and nurtured across UCI. By sharing these experiences, panelists hope to illuminate strategies that other units can implement in current or future collaborative projects aimed at increasing student success.
